究極の問いである、「音楽は普遍的なものか?」については否定的な答えが出ている。音楽を解する能力には、学習によって身につく要素がかなり大きい。同時に、音楽を聴くという行為と、文化的背景とは切り離せない。つまり、音楽がどう聞こえるか、ということ自体を、学習や属する文化がかなりの程度決めてしまうのだ。

　これは、異文化の音楽を聴くときにはっきりする。音楽が文化によって違うのは、音楽の「解釈」にあると誤解されがちだ。しかし、実際のところ、耳に聞こえた時点で違ったものになっている可能性が高いという。脳が聞こえる音に手を加え、自分の文化の枠内にある音楽であるかのように錯覚させてしまうのだと。

　音楽がわたしたちの耳にどう聞こえるかは、聞こえた音そのものだけによって決まるのではない。その人がこれまでどんな音楽を聴いてきたのか、つまりどういう音楽が聞こえると予測するかによっても聞こえ方は変わってくるというのだ。
