この記号が生まれた経緯はよく知られていません。収録されている「BA（飾り罫・地紋）」というサブプレートを見ると、（C）写研 ‘68 と記されていました。書体の種類が少なかった1968年にはもうこの記号が存在していたのです。手動写植機の円熟期である1980年代には、雑誌や漫画の台詞などに頻繁に使われていました。写研の電算写植機にも「一般記号 SAA1-244」として登録されているのですが、やはりDTPの普及によってあまり見かけなくなってしまいました。
